Your air conditioning unit is your best friend during the hot summer months as it’ll keep you cool and comfortable from the summer heat. However, they’re actually a significant part of your home’s annual energy expenditures. 12% to be exact, and 70% during the summer. In today’s post, your AC repair & maintenance specialist, Burch Oil & Propane, shares three tips you can use to maximize your air conditioner’s efficiency and cut down on utility costs.
Unblock and Clean Your Vents
One of the best and easiest ways to boost your AC unit’s efficiency is to keep your vents free from any kind of debris. You can use a vacuum to clear out small particles that have accumulated in your vents. This allows your AC unit to let cool air in freely without any debris blocking it which could strain the entire HVAC system. Also, ensure that there are no obstructions near your air conditioner’s vents. Keep things such as blinds, furniture, appliances and toys away from them since it disrupts the airflow which results in slow or inefficient airflow distribution around your home.
Increase Your Thermostat
While this may be an obvious tip, the long-term savings you get from increasing your thermostat to adequate levels are definitely noteworthy. You can adjust your thermostat anywhere from 5-8 degrees lower in the summer, or higher in the winter. You can save a lot more on your energy bills if you have a programmable thermostat. This allows you to have a preset temperature setting during the different times of the day, even if you’re away from home.
Keep Heat Away From Your Thermostat
A small, but important detail that some homeowners forget is that their thermostat’s location contributes to their home’s energy efficiency. If you decide to place your thermostat in a warm spot in your home, your cooling system will automatically adjust to that room’s temperature and use up more energy than necessary. Avoid installing your thermostat next to a lamp, a warm window, or other appliances that emit heat. Your thermostat might not be able to accurately read your home’s temperature properly.
