4 Reasons Behind Common Boiler Problems

Your boiler failing is the last thing you want to deal with in the middle of winter. Unfortunately, many homeowners fail to recognize the telltale signs of boiler failure before it actually occurs and leaves you without hot water. In this blog, heating oil specialist Burch Oil shares the reasons behind some of the most common boiler problems.

1. Thermostat Malfunction

While thermostat malfunctions are a relatively minor dilemma, they can have significant consequences for your boiler. For example, a defective thermostat can prevent your boiler from switching on or shutting down properly. It can also leave your home excessively colder or warmer than the desired temperature. If you are having issues with your boiler, the first thing you should do is check the thermostat.

2. Igniter or Pilot Light Failure

Boilers depend on electronic igniters and pilot lights to kickstart the main burner. While the blaze these components generate, you will not be able to use your boiler at all. These problems are pretty straightforward to fix, but if they occur frequently, you may want to call HVAC services and consider replacing your boiler altogether.

3. Limescale Buildup

Limescale is a hard, chalky deposit that consists mainly of calcium carbonate. It usually builds up inside boilers due to the presence of hard water. This buildup can severely restrict the free flow of water and produce infuriating kettle noises. Make sure to treat limescale deposits in a timely manner to prevent further complications, such as a shorter lifespan for electrical appliances.

4. Old Age

With proper care and maintenance, boilers can last anywhere from 10 to 20 years. Aging components can bring about a number of boiler problems, which is why it is beneficial to replace your device once it has reached its recommended lifespan.

  • My boiler started making some real loud kettle noises last night. I couldn't even sleep through it. Thank you for pointing out that calcium carbonate deposits can build up inside the boiler because of hard water deposits. Since I know nothing about boilers, I will call a boiler service company to come out and fix it so the noise is no longer there.

  • I've been having issues with my boiler. It makes sense that I would want to get a professional to repair my boiler for me. They would be able to ensure that it ends up fixing properly.

  • Thanks for explaining that limescale can build up due to excess hard water in the boiler. I'm hoping that I can call a boiler repair company to come and look at my boiler soon. I've noticed that there's limescale on it and I want to get it removed.
